Stories

When you read a story there is this inevitable moment that we the reader always see coming. That moment when the character is taken completely off guard and thrust into some form leadership, or adventure, or some life changing event from which they will never be the same. In most stories it all works out in the end, the character better off for being a part of some dramatic change.

I think we tell these stories because we need proof that it’s all gonna be okay at the end of the day. That when life throws us a change we’ll have a story to draw courage from. We not only tell ourselves these stories of victory and triumph but our children and their children too.

One of my favourites is the story of Percy Jackson, a kid thrown into greatness by destiny but denied by those in power. It’s wild and fantastical, and it gave me so much hope when I was kid.

My current favourite is the story of a woman who was irrevocably broken, kicked down by the world and life she was dealt. The story of a woman who despite all of her bones crushing self hatred was able to heal and become who she was meant to be.

Stories tell us the truths we are too scared to tell ourselves. They tell us the real truths the ones we really need to hear. The ones like, it’s gonna be okay, and it’s not all for nothing, and there’s greatness waiting all you need do is keep going. They tell us the truth that you can be so completely shattered and broken and still be okay, that that will not be the end that that will be the beginning. That you can walk away from pain and grief and still have a life unclouded by despair.

Fiction will forever hold a big pice of my heart. Were it not for the stories and books I read as a kid I would not be the same person I am today. I may never have even been here were it not for the truths I found scattered like cookie crumbs throughout library books.

Stories are important. Worth much more than just the ink on a page. They are priceless. They are truth, they are hope, they are trying their very best to tell you something true.
