Practice Begets

Often I start with an idea, or a feeling. Seldom do I have a plan right off the bat, planning can take quite a bit of time for me. But if I’m not carful I will get stuck in the planning and never get going. So I’ve learned to be okay with learning on the go. I’ve come to expect that I’ll only figure out some parts of the process once I start moving.

There’s the old saying “practice makes perfect” and well perfect doesn’t really exist, practice does make learning. I’m someone who doesn’t really learn something well unless I can see it or I’m doing or practising it. Which was something I had consciously forgot until I was in the middle of the painting I talked about in last weeks post.

In the age of social media and instant gratification it is easy to forget that not everything happens so fast. Most things take time and they are meant to. I didn’t get to my level of skill over night, it has come with years upon years of perseverance. And it often takes me hours to complete a single painting, let alone the time it took for me to learn the necessary skills and then master it. And I am far from a master. It will be years yet before I dare give myself that tittle. But I’ve been practicing and learning since I could hold the paint brush, and it counts for something.

Even with all that said its never too late to start, or start again. Whether you’re 10 years old or 72 you can always learn a new skill. You can always discover creativity. There’s no height restriction or maximum age. Creativity is for all those who breath and I stand by that. So long as you are willing to keep learning you will keep growing.

So practice might not make perfect, but practice begets practice and practice begets improvement. So keep on learning, and keep on trying over and over again, an inch a day is a foot ever 12 days. Again progress doesn’t happen over night and getting “good” at art is no different. So just keep learning.
